Library Employment and the ADA: Tuesday, September 25, 2007

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been in effect since 1990 and often employers and employees have questions about how it affects them.  Libraries are no exception in this respect.  They need to know:

  • How does the ADA affect the hiring process in libraries?
  • What is the definition of a disability under the ADA?
  • What kinds of accommodations must libraries make for employees with disabilities?
  • How can a library create a more diverse workplace by employing people with disabilities?

Attendees will learn the answers to these questions and much more about how the ADA affects library employees as well as about a new initiative to raise awareness of the positive aspects about employing people with disabilities, Connect-Ability.  We encourage librarians to attend with their (or their city’s) human resources staff.

There will be ample time for questions and discussion during the day.

Our primary presenter will be:

  • Stan Kosloski, Community Facilitator for the University of Connecticut Center on Disabilities, a division of the UConn Health Center.  He is also Project Director of the Disability Advocacy Collaborative, a newly formed statewide network of advocacy organizations that seeks to enhance the effectiveness of disability advocacy in Connecticut.  He was a founding member of the Americans with Disabilities Act Coalition of Connecticut and currently serves as its Treasurer.

This workshop is sponsored by the CLA ADA committee and the Connecticut State Library.
